A Felicidade

Sadness has no end
Happiness does

Happiness is like a feather
That the wind carries through the air
It flies so lightly
But has a brief life
It needs to have a wind that never stops

The happiness of a poor man is like
The grand illusion of Carnaval
People work the whole year long
For one moment's dream
To play the part of
A king or a pirate or a gardener
And all of that is ended on [Ash] Wednesday

Happiness is like a drop
Of dew on a flower's petal
It shines peacefully then swings lightly
And falls like a tear of love

My happiness is dreaming
In the eyes of my love
It is like a night that passes by
In search of the dawn
Speak quietly please
So that she wakes as happy as the day
Offering kisses of love

Happiness is a crazy thing
And so delicate too
It has flowers and love of all colors
It has bird nests
It has everything that is good
Because she's like this -- so delicate
I always treat her very well

Medicine for Melancholy

screens_feature9
The viewing of and following Q&A for Medicine for Melancholy at the SF international film fest was quite encouraging. A very simple story interperted elegantly by the actors, director, music supervisor and superb cinematographer, the film features a scene about Prop 98. The two main characters happen upon a community meeting discussing the issue. It may seem very out of place to include this scene in the romantic storyline but I thought it really worked. When asked about it in the Q&A, director Barry Jenkins said he decided to ignore any ideas that he shouldn't or couldn't include this scene because, it was his movie and he was going to do whatever the heck he wanted with it. He also recalled sharing the script with his friend who read it and said "we can totally make this movie". Then they gathered more friends and made it happen and it's beautiful.

Make your own project, do whatever the heck you want with it and bring all your friends along.

Treehouse

Went to see my friend Mr. N, the reptile expert and visionary horticulturist, to talk about snakes and his treehouse. He revitalized the garbage filled backyard of his apartment, removing over 20 big trash bags of junk, installing ponds and new plants. He introduced tadpoles which are now on their 2nd generation of frogs. There is a sunbathing turtle and he says lots of birds and critters have begun to hang out in the yard since he began his work back there.

Aside from many contracts, he has with various institutions, he also works on a project to help save the The San Francisco Garter snake.
The endangered San Francisco Garter snake
One day when his fort building cousin was visiting, he asked Ned why he hadn't built a tree house in the giant poplar tree in the yard. Of course! 2 weeks later he had a platform and rope 'walls' in the highest part of the tree. Here is the ascent, through a tunnel of ivy, climbing a little bit more than three stories.

Love and gratitude

Gratefulness is the key to a happy life that we hold in our hands, because if we are not grateful, then no matter how much we have we will not be happy -- because we will always want to have something else or something more
-Brother David Steindl-Rast

At times our own light goes out and is rekindled by a spark from another person.
Each of us has cause to think with deep gratitude of those who have lighted the flame within us.

Attention ladies and germs.

Your resident goon*, Nathalie Roland, has gone and carved out a teeny tiny print shop over at Activspace on 18th and Treat in the mission. That's right, Friday Capone, the green line-o-scribe table top relief press, has a new home. She sits in the sun by the window awaiting ink, woodcuts, linocuts, copper engravings, paper and strong arms.

Come by Sunday April 20th between 3-6pm to warm this new spot. We can see how many people we can fit in there, like sardines in a small child's shoe... Let me know if you are coming so I don't wait there all by my lonesome drinking all the tap water. -oshare@gmail.com

Sunday April 20th
3150 18th Street suite 512 At Treat street.
Ring #512 at the intercom entrance on Treat.

If you can't make it Sunday please feel free to stop by anytime or arrange a meeting. Consider yourself welcome to bring your coffee, beers and/or arty projects over and breath ink with me any time. I'll be participating in SF open studios the following weekend as well.

Big ups to my extra muscle and back up dancers- Leslie, Dan, Chris, Aya, Damon.

Love and hugs and hearts all over your face,
nathalie
